Chronic lead intoxication mimicking motor neurone disease.

چکیده
a sexual contact by gonorrhoea patients is a valid candidate for the procedure known as " epidemiologic treatment " even when cultures (which may miss 20%, or more of such gonococcal infections) are negative. If chemotherapy is adequate, a link in a chain of infection may thus be broken. A patient who would refuse a diagnosis of venereal disease may willingly accept this precautionary measure, just as chemoprophylaxis is accepted for ophthalmia neonatorum.-I am, etc., BYRON J. Motor neurone disease and exposure to lead.
Disease of the lower motor neurone is a recognized hazard of lead toxicity, but the importance of contact with lead in the causation of motor neurone disease has not previously been ascertained. In 74 cases of motor neurone disease, 15% had a history of extensive exposure to lead, compared with 5·4% of a control group. The five year survival rate of these patients was 54%, compared with 16% in ...
متن کاملC Cognition and behaviour in mot or neurone disease
Current Opinion in Neurology 2010, 23:638–642 Purpose of review Motor neurone disease has traditionally been considered a pure motor syndrome which spares aspects of cognition and behaviour, although in recent years it has been suggested that up to 50% of patients with motor neurone disease may develop frontal dysfunction which, in some cases, is severe enough to reach criteria for frontotempor...
متن کاملThe central nervous system in motor neurone disease.
Forty-five necropsied cases with primary degeneration of lower motor neurones are described and discussed. Of these, 36 are considered to be `typical' cases of motor neurone disease, eight of which showed no upper motor neurone lesions. The relation of the nine `atypical' cases to the remainder is discussed. It is concluded that motor neurone disease constitutes an ill-defined band in a broad s...
متن کاملChronic cutaneous leishmaniasis induced after trauma, mimicking keloidal scar
Leishmaniasis is a common parasitic disease classified to acute and chronic types based on the duration of the disease. The acute lesion is presented as ulcerated papule and nodule that heal after a few months with an atrophic scar. The chronic form of cutaneous leishmaniasis is a nonhealing lesion that is persistent for more than one year. Here, we describe a chronic case of leishmaniasis deve...
متن کاملDifferential gene expression in a cell culture model of SOD1-related familial motor neurone disease.
Motor neurone disease is caused by mutations in Cu/Zn superoxide dismutase (SOD1) in 15-20% of familial cases, due to a toxic gain of function by the mutant enzyme. However, the underlying mechanism of SOD1-mediated neurodegeneration remains uncertain. By investigating alterations in gene expression in the presence of mutant Cu/Zn SOD, we aimed to identify pathways that contribute to motor neur...
